They all work it just depends on what you like. The hash marks are for rockets. Try one out and you will see they work.
Buster maybe you could liven one of the sights you like best up a bit. I made the majority of them years ago.

I use Spit tool, Bf109 blue, cross lead, Flight Tool and even my Osti/wirble sight in a couple planes. The Osti Tool really does work as long as they are coming straight at ya.
Rail Tool I made today just screwing around. When I first started jabo'in I used rocket tool for everything. Thats were i learned approximately were to launch one at acks and buildings from far.
Check out my old forum I made for the RV guys a couple years back. LOTS of really good info. Don't click on anything added in July 2011. The site was spammed *Update 8/27/11 ALL Cleaned up

Tools,
You can get that blended glow look by creating the sights in 512x512 mode and using something like gaussien blur. Remember to include a mil file with 256 in it or your gunsight will be the size of a postage stamp. The 128 and 256 modes work best in a single color so you may or may not get much alph illumination when it's displayed in the gunsight mask.
Looks like you have a copy of my British M2 in 512x512. To make it size correctly you will have to create a BritM2.mil file to go with the BritM2.bmp file. They are very nice sights like I might see in a Red Dot holo scope on my shotgun or assault rifle. I prefer to use the historic graticules since HiTech finaly fixed his COAD and calibrated the gunsight view to 1Mil=2Pixel in 512x512 or 1Mil=36inches at 1000yards in 512x512.-bustr-

Yes, I was trying to recreate the British M2 using the same pallet but I could not get the glow. As to your explanation on to how it's done, I'll be trying it out in the next few days and thank you. I used to enjoy trying to make or find the perfect sight................... that might be impossible for obvious reason but I do have some preferred.

Here is a way to help your gunnery with a gunsight tool.
512x512 bitmap gunsight.
Use Cyan and yellow.
1.} 100Mil diameter circle and single pixel line cross in cyan. Remember 1Mil now = 2Pixel. Or 200pix diamter circle.
2.) In yellow 10Mil/20pix on each side of the cross place a yellow single pixel line.
3.) Connect the yellow lines with a line every 10Mil/20pix to make ladder boxes. A bigger Cross.
4.} Now with cyan at every 5Mil/10pix place a hash mark on the center cyan cross to give you 10Mil boxes halved with cyan tick marks.
5.} Save this thing and whatever name you give to it make a text file by that name for it with the number 256 in it.
Test.bmp - Test.mil
Go offline and change the arena time to 01:00 so your gunsight is not washed out against the white of the target. Takoff in your fighter and head north on auto level. Let the aricraft come to full cruise where its nose stops dropping and is steady. Pull up the (.target xxxx) at 200, 300, 400, 600 on full zoome and keep a record of how far below the center of the gunsight your rounds pattern as you shoot at it.
Now chase the drones around with that knowlege. Make your gunsights in 512x512 and your rings and any morks based on Mil. Then test them against what you know from the target testing with the sight you just built. Or if you downloaded my historic pack. They are all calibrated and your testing will augment those gunsights.-bustr-
