The article stated that it was 'kit built' so its not an original? its a replica? hmm didn't know you could build an p51 in your garage, would have figured you would need a machine shop of some magnitude.
the pilot previously known as ardy123

while i was still in A&P school (airplane mechanic) i worked at a shop building 3/4 scale p51 mustangs. (well, 3/4 scale bodies with 5/8 scale wings.) the company (now defunct i believe) was called papa 51 mustangs. they were built in the image of the old plastic models we built as kids. you put in all the parts in one half of the wing or fuselage and then glued on the other half. the entire airframe was made of carbon fiber which made for a VERY strong airplane. the airframe was tested to 605 mph (faster then the original) with no flutter on any of the control surfaces. it was powered by a 8 liter v12(900ish HP if i remember) made by a company in CA that makes race boat motors. they raced them in reno for several years in the sports class and there are still some flying around. do a search for papa 51 mustangs
