I have always heard that the LTAR’s are fearsome Ostwind drivers, so I thought I would take a look at how many kills that they have in the Ostwind. I am hear to tell you I was shocked. Not at their kills, but at the amount of Ostwind kills that I have this tour. I had 262 (new personal best) kills in the Ostie for this tour, the next closest LTAR only has 139 (when I checked scores). They are nowhere near as fearsome as this Pig. I tend to be a fairly humble guy, but I realized that I am pretty damn good in this vehicle. Knights and Pigs alike have been complimenting me and asking me how I do it, so I thought I would at least do a brain drain for my Pig brethren.
First thing that I suggest you check out is Zazen’s write-up on the Ostwind and field gunnery. His tips got me off to a great start! I will tell you that I have some differences from his suggestions as well as some additions of my own.

Here are my differences and additions to Zazen’s write-up:
1) It is not necessary to park on concrete to successfully shoot down enemy cons. I would recommend doing it until you feel real comfy in the Ostie and it’s capabilities. It gives a little more stability and allows you to have a quick out (end sortie) in the event of an enemy tank firing on you or enemy aircraft dropping ordnance on your vehicle.
2) Never park next to hangars, radar, or any other structure that the enemy tries to hit on a regular basis with ordnance. The Ostie is so thin-skinned that most bombs regardless of the size will remove you from the face of the earth.
3) I do not use the gunsight in the Ostie. I watch the tracers and try to place them in the guesstimated path of the airplane on deflection shots or center mass for head on shots.
Here is my setup for aiming:
-Page up your view in the turret all the way(do not zoom in), save this head position, use this view for scanning not engaging
-Head on shots-when a con gets inside of 2.0k go to full zoom, then engage walking the tracers onto center mass of plane(look for beautiful explosion)
-Deflection shots- when a con gets inside of 2.0k go to full zoom, then engage walking tracers in the guesstimated path of the airplane that is heading away from/or flying by you, making sure that you compensate appropriately for things like shell trajectory drop, plane’s speed, plane’s vector, etc. There really is no need to fire at a con that has moved beyond 2.5k, as kills are possible but rare at this distance (90% of my kills are at 1.0k or less).
4) Whenever you are attacking an enemy field in an Ostie try to stay behind friendly tanks. They cover your ass from armor attack, and you keep the cons carrying ordnance off their backs.
5) I cannot stress enough how important SA is for good Ostie sorties. Imagine a 3.0k bowl that is turned upside down over your Ostie. You need to know at all times what is coming and going out of your bowl!
6) If you are engaged by a enemy plane while you are driving, always try to turn into them. This does three things for you. First your armor is thicker on the front, and this protects your weaker side and rear areas(try to avoid getting tracked). Second, it steepens the enemy con’s dive which just might make him auger or at least blow his pass. Lastly, it creates the shot that the Ostie handles best-the head on shot! Try using your rudders to steer the Ostie, while firing the enemy con at the same time.
7) When turretted, do not quit. Keep using your hull gun. I usually pick up several more kills with it.
I welcome questions and suggestions from all of you. Hope this helps you swine:pig:out !
