So my chick friend, not Wendy, and I are wasting time in the afternoon enjoying adult substances... like we do most of the time, I'm retired and shes a hot bum of a chick. Upon getting the "munchies" we decided to hoof it to the hot dog stand 2 blocks away at the metro terminal.
We get there, order, sit and eat, stoned as hell enjoying our spicy dogs and mocking people for our amusement. There are about 12 Sheriffs deputies there, not unusual, but then, like a scene out of 1984, a white van pulls up unloading 6 US Army dudes wearing camo. I figure they're setting up recruiting booth, when they do that I usually buy all the guys dogs & drinks, from one vet to another kinda thing. But these guys are armed with M16s, radios, hand cuffs and side arms... and they start walking around talking to people. At this point I'm not sure what they're asking.
3 of them approach near us as were sitting eating, a staff Sgt with no name tag, only an empty Velcro stripe, asks me how I'm doing, with a full mouth I nod in the affirmative, he then asks if I have any ID.
WTF?, being a retired cop I know thats 100% Bullshizzle, they're not cops, have no police authority per Calif law section 830PC, no probable cause... maybe its some training exercise?
I politely decline, adding "I don't have to show you my ID", he quipps "yes you do", I respond "well, I'm not going to, and unless I'm being detained, I'm free to leave" He tells me I am being detained, under "federal authority" again asking for ID. "Nope" I say. I ask why I'm being detained, "trespassing" he says.
Well thats funny, trespassing, 602PC, is a misdemeanor and requires a refusal to leave.. I was never asked to leave, ergo hadn't the opportunity to refuse... I point this out to him and I'm told to "shut up", I respond in my cocky "I'm an American with rights" tude, "F that, you shut up!, you're are not a cop, will never be a cop, and have zero authority to demand shit from me".
At this point 2 Sheriffs deputies walk over, I'm getting pissed. My chick friend starts going off about how I'm a retired cop, went to the Sheriffs academy... the Army guys are police state fascists losers..."fags" for joing the Marines, ugh.. not exactly what I wanted her to say, but the one Dep did ask my academy class and what not, so I told him and produced my retired police ID.. more for my safety & professional courtesy than anything else, many retired cops are armed... but I wasn't carrying my ccw at the time.
The Army guys and Deputies have a pow wow, discussing big bad troublesome me, armed with a spicy dog extra onions.. ready to terrorize with bad breath.
My big mouth kicks in again.. I start demanding names, units, commanders names, I want the Sheriffs supervisor, complaint forms.. I want documentation of all this crap. I loudly protest the extreme bullshit of it all.. I'm getting really pissed.
I ask the Dep why the US Army is asking for my ID, then "detaining" me with no PC in the middle of Los Angeles, he shrugs and says he doesn't know.
5 min later the 2nd Deputy tells me if I have no legal business at the Metro station, I need to leave, in addition if I stick around collecting names it will be considered a refusal to leave. Fine.
Me with my retired banged up body, prosthetic leg & 1/2 paralyzed left arm and a 100lb 23 year old girl are escorted by armed US Army troops 40 yards off the Metro property... as a bewildered group of on lookers watched.
I placed a few calls to guys I still know on the dept, apparently there is some type of "Homeland security" training, or drill going on in the LA area, but these troops are only supposed to be a "uniform presence".
However they do have some type of Federal police powers.. and are doing useful stuff like sweeping the metro tunnels for explosives, which is great, but asking for ID of folks minding their own business? nah, I call BS on that.
In Calif it takes 100 applicants to hire 3 cops, the screening & testing is very tough..they don't give guns & police powers to just anyone. Yet here are these every day Army troops walking around in public armed, with police powers asking citizens for their papers.
I'm starting to believe all that fascism / police state conspiracy stuff man, that was just really amazing in a bad way. On one hand I'm glad they are there, if there's a real 'threat', the more .gov guns the better, and who better to keep the merto explosive free? but leave me alone.. go sniff the trash for C4 or harass long bearded dudes wearing turbans.. leave the hot dog eating public alone... xtra onions is not a crime!
