Hello Sol,

Please take my questions as an inquisitive student. My questions are concerning the following excerpt:

"If you have a climb rate, or energy advantage, the preferred method is to perform a 2nd immelman. This will immediately give you an altitude advantage. In some aircraft, those that have a very high degree of stability at low speeds, and good thrust to weight ratios, (Such as the P-38) A 3rd immelman can be performed. This gives even more advantage.
Since the goal during the merge is to have an angles AND an energy advantage, generally every fight should begin with this “double immelman”. "

1) Is the second immelman used to equalize E/Alt with con and/or try to bleed more E out of the con to gain angles?

2) Is the third immelman reserved for circumstances where you are at an advantage or disadvatage as far as con's E/ALT?

Your answers are appreciated,

Way

the 2nd immelman is used to Equalize or gain an advantgae in E/Alt. It is used primarily to gain an E advantage, allowing you to dictate the fight.

The same applies to the 3rd immelman. VERY few aircraft can perform this, the P-38 being the main exception, due to it's lack of torque. This would be used the gain an even greater advantage over a con who does only 1 immelman, Or an initial advantage over a con who matches your 2nd immelman. MOST aircraft are going to stall and spin attempting to follow you up on the 3rd immelman, allowing you to slice down in a hammerhead and take a shot while they flounder trying to recover.

Hello Sol,

Thanks for the additional information. I am pretty sure I will not be able to make the scheduled training times on Saturdays, but I will read, digest, and implement this stuff.

Have a great day,

Way

We can always schedule a different time ahead of time Way, that is simply the time I will have for "open training"

Since I have different hours as everyone else being in Korea I can do late night training, something about the immelman is not everyone will use an immelmen off the bat and this can throw some people off, I personally dont use immelmans anymore because I like reversals as my way of getting a planes six. Spiral Climbs are my specialty this is what I use when I either can out climb a plane or have more E because it will actually bait a con into a stall better then the Rope. but this move also requires you to be very close to the enemies cons sights better remeber if he has his sights on you he isnt gunna hit you its when he get them in front of you that you must worry.:salute:

Indeed, however for the majority an immelman or oblique immelman would give them the best setup. Keep in mind the spiral climb is VERY airframe dependent.. you wouldnt want to do one in a p47 for example... try to keep in mind, we are teaching generalities, not specifics at this point. Later on, we can break it down to aircraft specialists, but for now keep it more general and applicable to any airframe.
